Ensign Services began as a specialised laundry in Melbourne in 1927. Almost a century later, our purpose remains the same: providing the linen, garments and workwear businesses depend on, supported by the service, expertise and reliability to keep them moving.
What has changed is our scale. Today, our commercial laundries process millions of items each year for healthcare, aged care, hospitality, accommodation, industrial manufacturing, resource and facilities, and other essential industries. From linen and workwear programs to specialist laundry and dry cleaning services, everything we do is built around quality, reliability and service.
More than 100 years of service
Much has changed since Taylors was established in New Zealand in 1919 and Ensign began in Australia in 1927. Technology, operations and customer expectations have continued to evolve, but our commitment to quality, reliability and service remains unchanged.
1927
The story begins
Ensign was established in 1927 as a specialised laundry services West Melbourne.
1935
Expanding our capabilities
The business expanded into multiple locations in Melbourne.
1977
Joining Spotless
Spotless acquired a majority shareholding in Ensign and began expanding services to broader markets with industrial workwear services.
1990–2000s
Spotless buys remaining shareholding
Spotless acquired the remaining shareholding in Ensign and continued to expand the business, including into New Zealand through the acquisition of Taylors. For the next four decades, Spotless operated its laundry services under the Ensign name.
2021
Adamantem Capital acquires Ensign and Taylors
Australasia’s largest textile management company commenced with rebranding Ensign, Taylors and Linen Services Australia. Brand segmentation was introduced to reflect the markets in which the business operated.
2025
A new era has commenced.
Macquarie Asset Management acquires Ensign, Linen Services Australia and Taylors
